Delhi police had issued character certificate to Uber cab driver in August

Delhi police on Monday came under scanner for giving a clean 'character certificate' to the rape-accused Uber cab driver. According to reports, additional DCP southeast Delhi police had issued a character certificate to Shiv Kumar Yadav in August 2014. It was revealed during initial investigations that Yadav had spent seven months in jail in a rape case which was filed against him in south Delhi's Mehrauli area in 2011. The criminal record of the driver was not kept in mind while issuing the certificate, even though he was acquitted. Meanwhile, Delhi government banned all operations by private cab service Uber with immediate effect and blacklisted it from providing any transport service in the national capital in the wake of the alleged rape incident in a taxi plying for it. "The transport department has banned all activities related to providing of any transport service by www.uber.com with immediate effect. The department has also blacklisted the company from providing any transport service in the NCT of Delhi in future," the Delhi government said in a statement.
