Parents of a 21-year-old fourth year engineering student N. Sagar Babu
have donated his organs after physicians declared the youngster as brain
dead under the State-run Jeevandan, organ donation programme. A student
of Gurunanak Engineering College, Sagar Babu was injured in a road
accident while riding his bike on September 23 near VMR Convention Hall,
Injapur.
The injured engineering student was immediately shifted to Aware Global
Hospitals, L. B. Nagar. According to Jeevandan officials, on Saturday,
September 26, Shankariah (father) and Saroja (mother) gave consent for
organ donation and retrieval. According to health officials, the
parents, despite the loss, felt that their child will continue to live
on if they gave consent to organ donation.
The treating neurophysicians and hospital’s organ donation co-ordinators
conducted grief counselling to the parents and convinced them on the
importance of organ donation. Two kidneys, liver, lung and two heart
valves were retrieved and sent to various hospitals for transplantation
for deserving patients under the Jeevandan scheme.
