MAN CLIMBED A CELL TOWER NEAR ASSEMBLY

A man who climbed a cell tower opposite Telangana Legislative Assembly here on Tuesday, threatening to end his life by taking the plunge was counselled and convinced by the city police to climb down.
The drama lasted for about 20 minutes, bang opposite the Assembly complex, even as the House was discussing the severity of farmers’ woes and how they were taking the extreme step. Unnoticed by anyone, Sammaiah, hailing from the outskirts of Warangal climbed the back wall of the All India Radio and unseen by anyone climbed up the cell tower.

When police got to know about it, Deputy Commissioner-Central Zone V.B. Kamalhasan Reddy promptly asked Additional DCP M. Ramamohan to tackle the situation. The latter managed to convince Sammaiah for him to yell out his mobile phone number. Once Mr. Ramamohan got the phone number, he called the distraught man and initiated a conversation, even as the poor man took a sip of a pesticide.
“Sammaiah said he was at his wits’ end, not knowing what to do. He had served as a driver for a while, but currently does not have any job. Owning a small piece of land in a nearby village did not fetch him any revenue, only loans piled up. He wanted Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari to come out of the Assembly and speak to him. But we convinced him to come down from the tower,” the police officer said.
“After he came down, we put him in an ambulance and sent him for medical assistance after administering first aid. Once he is better, he will be taken to the Secretariat for an audience with Mr. Srihari,” Mr. Ramamohan said.
